The article “Serum Vitamin E and Oxidative Protein Modification in Hemodialysis: A Randomized Clinical Trial” from Lu et al, which appeared on pages 305 to 313 of the August 2007 issue of AJKD, contained 2 errors.

On page 311, the statement “In vitro, tocopheryl quinone is produced by oxidation of α-tocopherol with a concomitant decrease in transition metal ions (Fig 3B) that then mediate reductive cleavage of hydroperoxides to alkoxy radicals” should be corrected to read “In vitro, tocopheryl quinone is produced by oxidation of α-tocopherol with concomitant reduction of transition metal ions (Fig 3B) that then mediate reductive cleavage of hydroperoxides to alkoxy radicals.”

Similarly, in the legend for Figure 3, also on page 311, the phrase “Reduction in transition metal ions by tocopherols” should read “Reduction of transition metal ions by tocopherols.”

These corrections clarify that the metal ions are being reduced from a higher to a lower oxidation state by tocopherols, not that there are fewer metal ions. The authors regret any confusion caused by the original phrasing.
